At its meeting on 30 April, the Board approved the audited Trustee's Report and Annual Accounts 2013. The auditors did not report any issues to the Trustees in their audit findings. The summary consolidated statement of financial activities for the year ended 31 December 2013 is enclosed.
The Day of Science and Careers event which was held in London in April 2014 was well attended despite the tube strike. The event was a great success with a good range of speakers and networking opportunity. Thanks go to our colleagues on the Early Career Support Sub-Committee for their efforts in promoting the event and enhancing the benefits of SCI membership activities. The Sub-Committee is also liaising with the Royal Society on future potential joint activities.
The refurbishment of our headquarters in Belgrave Square is progressing well and on budget. The AGM will be held in the newly refurbished auditorium, when you will have the opportunity to see for yourself the new facilities. Another reason to attend the AGM this year in person.
I am sorry to report the deaths of two highly valued and much liked members of SCI: Colin Borg and François Schué. Both were active participants in SCI's governance for many years; they will be sadly missed by all of us who knew and worked with them.
Clamour of interest
The Board of Trustees was delighted to see once again such strong interest from a wide range of members who wish to participate in governance. The rule change to allow self-nomination has clearly been successful. There are more candidates than positions for the Board of Trustees (seven candidates for three ordinary Trustee positions) and two candidates for the Chair of PAC and accordingly there will be elections. I therefore encourage all members to use their vote, either in person at the AGM or by post using the form provided in your AGM pack.
Dr Jack Melling
Chairman of the Board of Trustees
