Invitation to SCI’s Free Public Evening Lecture
Professor Martyn Poliakoff (CBE) – Casting light on a greener future
Wednesday 25 April 2018
- Sir Martyn Poliakoff became famous for his popular series of YouTube videos, the Periodic Table of Videos, in which he made chemistry simple, interesting, and accessible to more than 800,000 subscribers.
- In this Public Evening Lecture, he will turn his attention to photochemistry, the study of light’s effect on chemical reactions.
- Developments in this exciting field could lead to significant benefits for society, including smart windows that adapt according to changing light and breakthrough medical technologies that enable minimally invasive surgery.
On Wednesday 25 April 2018, at SCI’s Public Evening Lecture, Sir Martyn Poliakoff will update the audience on his research group’s progress in the field of photochemistry, working in partnership with chemists and engineers at Nottingham, Bristol, and Southampton Universities. The group has been addressing some of the challenges of making photochemistry greener, more energy efficient and more widely accessible. In 1912, the pioneering Italian chemist, Ciamician, presented a powerful vision of a world where photochemistry would enable fuel breakthroughs to power civilisation. Martyn Poliakoff and his team are working to make that vision a reality.
About the Speaker
Sir Martyn Poliakoff’s YouTube series, featuring an extensive range of experiments and different anecdotes from the professor about each element of the periodic table, has received praise from the public as well as from Nobel Prize winners, including Roald Hoffmann.
Sir Poliakoff is a Research Professor of Chemistry at University of Nottingham.
He has been involved with many organisations through his career, including being a Fellow of the Royal Society, of the RSC, the IChemE, the Academia Europeae, and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
He was a Council Member of the IChemE (2009-13) and Foreign Secretary and Vice-President of the Royal Society (2011-16). He was awarded CBE in 2008 for ‘Services to Sciences’, and knighted in 2015 for ‘Services to the Chemical Sciences’.
His research interests are focused on supercritical fluids, continuous reactions, and their applications to Green Chemistry.
