Businesses in the UK have been invited to apply for a share of £5 million to improve the resource and energy efficiency of so-called foundation industries.

An investment of £5 million from the UK Government’s Innovate UK, as part of UK Research and Innovation, will fund cross-sector and collaborative research and development projects aimed at improving the productivity and competitiveness of the foundation industries’ supply chains and encourage companies to stay in the UK. The Transforming Foundation Industries competition is open to business in the cement, paper, glass, ceramics, metals and bulk chemicals sectors.
The projects can focus on any part of the manufacturing process including feedstock inputs, production and material product development.
Eligibility criteria include, the project must comprise at least one micro, small or medium-sized enterprise and last between three and twelve months. Participants must be ready to start their projects in July 2020.
