SCI’s Early Careers Committee (ECC) held its ninth annual Day of Science and Careers (DoSC) meeting at SCI HQ, London, on the 28th March 2019.
Professor Alan Heaton, Chair of ECC
The programme consisted of several regular topics plus three new ones, which were suggested in the feedback from last year’s event.
The first session addressed starting out in academia and industry. This was followed by an interactive activity led by Tim Reynolds, with the support of Inna Baigozina-Goreli and Beth Moore – all of whom are ECC members. The interactive session was built around connecting with SCI. It highlighted how SCI could offer opportunities to network and to learn about various career options, in addition to providing mentoring opportunities.
Session two covered topics within working in a biosciences or chemical SME, working as an employee in big pharma as well as working as a student.
Session three had two new topics in the biology area – ‘A career in biology as an academic’ by Steven Harte, Post-doctoral organic chemist/chemical ecologist from Greenwich University and ‘Biology careers in the agrochemicals industry’ by Robin Blake, Senior Regulatory Consultant and Chair of SCI’s Agrisciences group.
The final session started with another new topic – scientific journalism. Clive Cookson, Science Editor at the Financial Times, gave a useful insight into this and answered many questions in his interactive discussion.
The meeting concluded with two regular contributors; Dr Nathalie Huther, Business Development Manager, Arcinova, spoke about scientific marketing and sales, before Richard Carruthers, Careers Service, Imperial College London, finished off with ‘Top tips for successful job applications.’
Sadly, this was Richard’s last contribution due to his promotion to Deputy Director of the Careers Service at Imperial College London. We thank him for all his informative presentations over several meetings and wish him well.
Participants all agreed that it had been an excellent, interesting and informative event with a useful opportunity for networking, questions and discussion during the informal nibbles and refreshments at the end.
