The 15th Joint Annual Conference of the SCI - Chinese UK Group (SCI-CS) and The Chinese Society of Chemical Science and Technology in the UK (CSCST-UK), was held at the University of Liverpool’s Department of Chemistry.
The local conference chairs were Prof Jianliang Xiao and Dr Haifei Zhang. The conference was supported by SCI, the Education Section of the Chinese Embassy in China, and sponsored by Akzo Nobel.
The theme of the conference was ‘New Materials and Green Chemistry & Technology’. The occasion brought together chemists, chemical engineers and biochemists working in the areas of materials, energy, chemical synthesis, and green chemistry and technology. More than 130 researchers registered for the conference including the registration through the SCI website, and about 120 people from academia and industry attended.
SCI’s honorary president Dr John Beacham gave an opening talk, and Mr Andrew Ladds, SCI’s chief executive 2005-10, introduced the activities and background to SCI. The first plenary lecture was given by Prof Matt Rosseinsky, FRS from University of Liverpool, on inorganic materials, such as specially-designed oxide compounds and their structures and various applications. The second plenary lecture was given by Prof Edman Tsang, University of Oxford, on the development of nanomaterials and interfaces for catalysis, sensor and bio-medical applications, which covered the broad development of frontier research on the nanoscale materials. Dr Cigang Xu presented the gifts following the plenary lectures on behalf of SCI.
The following 18 lectures and talks were delivered in two separate lecture rooms according to their academic disciplines, and 18 posters were presented during this one-day conference.
In the conclusion session, Dr Chunxiao Zheng, the Chinese representative of Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) introduced the activities of RSC in China. Then, prizes for best oral presentation and posters for the conference were recommended by the referee panels.
Finally Dr Cigang Xu introduced the SCI Chinese UK Group and explained how to join SCI.
