Garret ChurchillGarret Churchill is a 2022 Canada Student Merit Award winner. He achieved this award for obtaining the highest standing of his class in the fourth and final year of his degree. Here is a brief biography of the winner.

Garret Churchill recently graduated in 2022 from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering - Biochemical Option. He is currently continuing his education by pursuing graduate studies in novel biomass-to-biofuel production at the University of Saskatchewan, under the supervision of Canada Research Chair in Bioenergy and Environmentally Friendly Chemical Processing, Dr. Ajay Dalai. Like many involved in the discipline, he has a passion for chemical engineering and the vast opportunities it has to offer. The use of innovative chemical engineering techniques to produce renewable and environmentally friendly products for a sustainable future has always been an area of fascination for Garret. As a result, he pursued extra credits to specialize in a biochemical processing option during his undergraduate degree, while achieving the Dean's Honour Roll throughout his 4-year journey.

Honoured to have received the 2022 University of Saskatchewan SCI Student Merit Award, Garret has received numerous other awards and scholarships that have helped him in his academic journey. Some of the academic highlights he is grateful for include Nutrien Ltd. Engineering Scholarships, an ACEC Brian Eckel Memorial Scholarship, a Robert R. Moffat Memorial Scholarship, and a Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering Award Medal.

Outside of academia, Garret worked in the construction industry and completed an internship at a uranium processing mill, gaining interesting and invaluable hands-on experience during his undergrad. In his spare time, he also enjoys a healthy balance of playing recreational sports like soccer and volleyball, as well as taking in the outdoors through canoeing and camping.  With the skills he is continuing to develop, Garret aspires to have a positive impact on society as a chemical engineer in the future.
