Canada Student Merit Award Recipient, Bradley Isenor

13 March 2023

Brad LsenorBradley Isenor is a 2022 Canada Student Merit Award winner. He achieved this award for obtaining the highest standing of his class in the fourth and final year of his degree. Here is a brief biography of the winner.

Bradley Isenor began his undergraduate studies at Mount Allison University (Sackville, NB) in 2018 with aspirations of studying biology and becoming a doctor. In his second year of studies Bradley was given the opportunity to study in Dr Jenny PS Wong’s environmental chemistry lab (The W(r)ong Group). This was a transformative experience for him as it opened his eyes to the joys of research and the numerous opportunities that chemistry provided. Having this new experience, Bradley had new goals of doing a chemistry honours project with Dr Wong and pursuing a career in research. During his time at Mount Allison, he also gained valuable experience as a teaching assistant, an executive member of the Chem/Biochem Society, and as a member of several other clubs, societies, and committees.

Bradley had the joy of working in Dr Wong’s over the summers of 2020-2022 studying the oxidative potential of aerosols emitted from biomass burning cookstoves. During this time, he gained a vast set of skills related to biochemistry, analytical chemistry, and atmospheric aerosol sampling. Additionally, in his senior year he had the honour of doing an independent research project with the late Dr. Stephen A Westcott. In Dr Westcott’s lab, Bradley worked on developing a new hydroxypyridinone and learned a new set of skills for working in an inorganic chemistry lab (eg NMR, microwave radiation reactions, and working in an inert environment).

In May 2022, Bradley graduated with first class honours with distinction, a major in chemistry, and minor in biochemistry. He is currently attending the University of Toronto for a direct-entry PhD in Environmental Chemistry under the supervision of Dr Arthur Chan (co-supervised by Dr Jon Abbatt).

In his spare time, Bradley enjoys bouldering, hiking, photography, and exploring his new home, Toronto, in search of the best cafés.
