28 November 2013
SCI's Thames and Kennet Regional Group
This event is no longer available for registration.
This talk will be delivered by Mr Adam Reid of the University of Cambridge.
You will probably have heard tell of some of the more celebrated aspects of quantum mechanics: the uncertainty principle, profound philosophical questions and implications, cats that are both alive and dead at the same time, etc. This lecture will aim to introduce some of the basic concepts in an accessible manner, thus allowing us to proceed to a discussion of that most mysterious and counter-intuitive of topics: quantum tunnelling. Can a skier really pass through the side of a mountain and emerge on the other side? What about the atoms that make up a water molecule? All will be revealed!
