Synopsis
The remarkable ease with which some biological tissue surfaces glide over each other (e.g. in eye blinking and knee joints) has long puzzled and humbled us. The subject of friction and lubrication is as important and relevant today (e.g. in healthcare and industrial applications), as it was in antiquity (e.g when ancient Egyptians transported stone statues). However, our fundamental understanding of the enigmatic mechanism for biolubrication remains limited. We have critically examined different biolubrication mechanisms and proposed a hydration lubrication mechanism that points to the fluidity of water molecules as the key to unlock nature's secret lubrication.
