The ECR Materials annual conference returns to Belgrave square! This year, we will be focusing on sustainable and bio-based materials. With the world becoming increasingly aware of ecological and environmental struggles from pollutants such as microplastics, the materials community has a very real role to play in overcoming the challenges presented by phasing out these materials and replacing them with more environmentally compatible materials. Sustainable materials also have a huge role to play in tacking climate change, with an estimated annual total of 880 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalents produced from European manufacturing industries alone – sustainable materials technologies are one of many avenues in which science may present solutions to the threat of climate change.
A new feature of this year’s conference is the introduction of the ‘Challenges to Action’ program – in which several industries in the fields of sustainable and bio-based materials will present the current challenges faced by their respective businesses and some of the approaches they have considered so far and where they are looking to improve. There will then be several networking sessions and opportunities to build links between researchers in industry and/or academia to begin to tackle these challenges.
Contributions are invited from early-stage researchers and PhD students working in the materials science field focused on bio-based or sustainable to submit an abstract for an oral or poster presentation. The poster session will be held in the garden room at Belgrave Square during the lunch break and after the talks. An abstract of maximum 250 words indicating title, authors, institution and preference for presentation option (oral presentation or virtual poster) should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org by Tuesday 31 May with the subject line “SCI sustainable and bio-based materials - abstract submission”. Presentation slots are inevitably limited and will be allocated to achieve a balanced programme – researchers will be invited to contribute a poster if submission is not chosen for oral presentation. Prizes will be awarded for the best presentation and poster. An abstract template can be found here.
