The P2 Steam Locomotive Company is building the most powerful steam locomotive to have ever operated on the UK rail network (following on from the very successful construction and operation of a brand new A1 locomotive).
It is based on a 1930's design by the acclaimed locomotive engineer, Sir Nigel Gresley, of which 6 were built (non survive). We are fortunate to have Rob Morland, an ex-Trustee of the AI Steam Locomotive Trust and currently designing electrical systems for the P2 locomotive, to explain some of the issues involved; in particular, how modern computer design and modelling can enhance the original blueprints to avoid some of the engineering weaknesses in the original and exploit the properties of modern materials.
Some of the issues in project managing a £5m project which relies solely on voluntary contributions for funding will also be touched on.
