This award is presented to an individual for significant strategy development and successful implementation within the Canadian chemical Industry.

Award presentation

The award shall normally be presented at the annual SCI Canada Awards Dinner, typically held in early April, where the winner will be expected to attend and deliver a short acceptance speech. The winner may be invited to present a lecture at this event and will also receive a plaque.

2023 Recipient - Mr Rory Francis, PEI BioAlliance

Mr Rory Francis, PEI BioAlliance will receive the Purvis Memorial Award at SCI's Canada Awards 2023. The award is presented to an individual for significant strategy development and successful implementation within the Canadian chemical Industry.

2022 Recipient - Dr Henry Stronks, Bruker Ltd

As Global Head of Sales at Bruker, Henry facilitated the purchase of instrumentation, including the world’s first ultra-high solids nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system (900 MHz) in Ottawa and Canada’s first 1 GHz NMR spectrometer. He also assisted research teams across the country to assemble cutting-edge-infrastructure for tackling research challenges supported by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and other granting agencies.

2021 Winners

The 2021 winners of the Purvis Memorial Award are: Dr Sarah Gallagher; Science Adviser to the President of the Canadian Space Agency and Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Western University and Dr Cara Tannenbaum; Departmental Science Advisor to Health Canada and a Professor in the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy at the Université de Montréal.

Eligibility Criteria

    Background
    • Major contribution to the development and implementation of distinctive business or technical strategies
    • These strategies must have resulted in the strengthening of Canadian industry or academic or research institutions in the field of chemistry
    • SCI membership is not a prerequisite for receiving this award
    Career Stage
    • Senior managerial positions in Canadian industry
    • Canadian academics with a clear industry connection and who have had strategic influence on Canadian industry
    Areas
    • Open to traditional chemical companies focusing on chemical manufacture and distribution and other industries such as biotechnology, coatings, crop protection, environmental services, fertiliser, food, mining/metal extraction, oil/gas, pharmaceuticals, plastics, pulp/paper and synthetic fibres.
    • Canadian chemical industry
